Sculpted Eagle

Over the past several years the Emerald Ash Borer has killed hundreds of thousands of ash trees across Michigan. Most of these dead trees are being cut down and used for firewood. However, one little town in Michigan decided to feature its dead trees as sculptures in the little park in the center of town.

Here is one of those sculptures-a magestic eagle that took 2nd place in the sculpture carving contest.

    1. Believe it or not, first place was even more amazing (in a different kind of way than this one is)--I be posting photos of it in the next day or two.

    1. It is a little town called Williamston--about 10 miles from Lansing (Michigan's capital).

  5. The second shot looks like a painting! What a glorious idea to turn a dead tree trunk into a piece of art!

  6. We live with ash forests surrounding us, and have lost so many trees already in our yard & along our driveway.
Curse that Emerald Ash Borer!!! They say it isn't here yet, but I don't believe it.
How wonderful art is, though, and this very artful preservation.
    How was it carved?
We often have chainsaw carving contests at area festivals in the summer. Amazing what they can do!

    1. This was carved with a chainsaw. I'm sorry your ash trees are dying as well. We've lost so many ash trees ourselves!

  8. This is stunning and such a fantastic use of the dead tree. Last
year I discovered a tree sculpture in someone's yard (a squirrel resting against a mushroom) which I though was pretty cool. This one beats that for sure.

  9. What a terrific community art project for such a positive effort--making something memorable out of the loss of the natural beauty from the trees.
