Stinging snow pellets
bite through gray air
erasing color
from landscape and sky
Sagging lines
stretch across fields
wooden supports leaning
tired and cold.
Eyes squinting though the snow
Head down against the wind
hands in pockets
I hurry towards warmth
Nothing of beauty here,
to catch the eye
In this treeless land
of lifeless cornfields
and leaning telephone poles.
Or is there?

(Inspired in part by Stewart's skywatch post last Friday over at Paying Ready Attention...finding beauty in the common everyday skies. Our skies the past several days have for the most part been pretty colorless--yet, even then there is a certain stark beauty to be found.)
There is awesome beauty in the skies even when they are fearful. Your poem is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAh, sometimes it IS hard to find the beauty, especially in the midst of a bitter winter, but you are right...beauty can be found if you really look.
ReplyDeleteOh, I do like the softness of a snowstorm.
ReplyDeleteHi Kateri, Well, you may be happy to know that here in TN we are finally having a really nice warmish day! Finally! Ha! Your poem and picture are great! Happy Groundhog Day!
ReplyDeleteOh yes there is!
ReplyDeleteI love your poem but I think the scene is beautiful :-)
ReplyDeleteKateri, this is such a beautiful and interesting photo. I really like it. And very cool that Steward inspired it!
ReplyDeleteCaptured so beautifully! Have a great weekend.

Hi there - I think the idea of lenses is important when you try to take pictures. Not the lenses on the camera, but the lenses we carry based on our own prejudice and assumption. I still find it strange that people say that you cannot find beauty in winter scenes - I think that is a leant lens that would filter out scenes like your picture.
ReplyDeleteI like its simplicity and its lack of tone - its flat, but it’s not unattractive.
Glad to be a source of inspiration.

PS: I don’t really mind, but have a quick look at the last letter of my name!
Beautiful picture and poem.
ReplyDeleteRegards and best wishes
Great poem and I like the softness of the snowy picture!
ReplyDeleteOur skies here in Minnesota rival yours in the colorless department. You're right about finding beauty nonethless.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
Oops! Corrected the spelling on your name, Stewart! Agree that there is lots of beauty in the winter. Gray day after gray day can get me down though...that is when I have to look beyond what my mind has been trained to think of as beauty.
